2024-2025 Mellon Foundation Humanities Internship Stipend Application

Generous funding from the Mellon Foundation has allowed ODU's Monarch Humanities Internship Academy (MHIA) to support students doing internships over the next five years (2024-2028).

This application is designed for students who have already secured an internship, externship, practicum, co-op, or other form of work-based learning experience (WBLE) and would like to be considered for a Mellon Foundation Humanities Internship Stipend through the Academy's Internship Studio. If you have not yet secured an internship and would like to explore Mellon-funded opportunities please email MHIA Assistant Directors Dr. Michael Thompson or Dr. Oge Nwandu-Vincent at internship@odu.edu.

The award pays students up to $5,000 in support of an internship.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Please review the following information concerning stipend eligibility and stipend requirements:
ELIGIBILITY 1) Applicants must be an undergraduate student currently enrolled in selected humanities majors at ODU. For a list of eligible majors, see the drop down menu under "Please select your major below." If you do not see your major, but have secured an internship and are interested in financial support, email internship@odu.edu for more information. 2) Stipends only support humanities students completing unpaid internships at non-profits or government agencies. However, if you are a humanities student with an internship at a for-profit company, email internship@odu.edu for information about receiving a monetary award to create and share an internship ePortfolio. 3) Undergraduate humanities students must secure an internship of at least 50 hours before applying for a stipend. They must also demonstrate enrollment in either their department's for-credit internship course (COMM 368/HIST 368/SPAN 369, etc.) or the zero-credit and tuition-free UNIV 068 before they apply for a stipend. STIPEND REQUIREMENTS--Please note that students who receive a stipend must: 1) complete a short work-based learning experiences (WBLE) module before their internship; 2) create and share an internship ePortfolio with ODU and the Mellon Foundation; 3) participate in a Student Internship Exit Survey at the end of their internship.

Please note that Humanities students in teaching licensure degrees (WLC with a Major in PreK-12 Spanish Education; History with a Major in Secondary History/Social Sciences Foundation; English with a Major in Secondary English Education) may be eligible to receive Mellon funding if they are doing internships in fields not directly related to education. Mellon funds cannot be used to support these students’ required student teaching (TLED 485).
