Application for Giandoni Scholarship in History

Please carefully read the award information below and fill out the application form below. Here’s what is required for the application for the Giandoni Scholarships in History:
• Your current cumulative and departmental GPA.
• A list of courses taken at ODU in the Department of History, and grades received.
• A digital submission of a writing sample of at least 5 pages. The writing sample should be a paper or assignment written for a current or previous college-level course (history or non-history) at ODU or another institution.
• At least one faculty recommendation from a full-time member of the Department of History. Please contact the faculty member to let them know you will be applying and are requesting assistance.
Instructions:

Applicants will submit this completed application form that includes a current cumulative and departmental GPA and a list of courses taken at ODU in the Department of History and grades received, along with a writing sample of at least 5 pages. The writing sample should be a paper or assignment written for a current or previous college-level course (history or non-history) at ODU or another institution. Applicants will also request a full-time faculty member of the department to submit a recommendation form on their behalf.


Award Information:

  1. • A maximum of $30,000 will be granted during each academic year.
  2. • All Award monies will be used for the payment of undergraduate tuition.
  3. • The Giandoni Awards Committee will evaluate all applications for overall academic merit, prior performance in the History Department and continuing promise as a History student.
  4. • Applicants must be rising sophomores or higher, who are enrolled as History majors or minors with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher, who have taken at least 12 credit hours in the History Department OR completed 9 credit hours in the ODU History Department PLUS 3 credits in History at another institution, and are making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP), as defined by the Office of Student Financial Aid. An Advanced Placement (AP) course in history may count towards the 3 credits earned at another institution.
  5. • Applicants are required to submit at least one, no more than two faculty recommendations.
  6. • Applicants must submit a writing sample of at least 5 pages demonstrating engagement with primary sources. Students should submit only ONE writing sample, often from HIST 201 if the student has taken the course.
  7. Students must be enrolled for 12+ credits during the semester(s) in which they are to receive the award.
  8. • Recipients who have not previously taken HIST 201: Historical Methods will be required to take the course during the scholarship semester.
  9. • Applicants may apply for either one or two semesters of support. Awards will typically be in the amount of $2500 to $5000 but the size and number of awards will be decided at the committee’s discretion.
  10. • Applicants may reapply in future semesters but priority will be given to excellent students who have not yet received the Award.
  11. • ODU’s Office of Student Financial Aid will administer the Giandoni Scholarships in History.
