Application for Giandoni Study Abroad Scholarship

Please carefully read the award information below and fill out the application form below. Here’s what is required for the application for the Giandoni Study Abroad Scholarships:
• Your current cumulative and departmental GPA.
• A list of courses taken at ODU in the Department of History, and grades received.
• A digital submission of a one-page, single-spaced statement explaining why you have selected a particular study abroad program. Please include how the program will impact your current historical studies and future career trajectory.
• One faculty recommendation from a full-time member of the Department of History. Please contact the faculty member to let them know you will be applying and are requesting assistance.


Instructions:

Applicants will submit this completed application form that includes a current cumulative and departmental GPA and a list of courses taken at ODU in the History Department and grades received, along with a one-page, singled spaced statement explaining why they have selected a particular study abroad program and how that program will impact their current historical studies and future career trajectories. They will also request one full-time member of the department to submit a recommendation form on their behalf.


Award Information:

  1. • Awards offer financial assistance in the amount of $1,000 to $5,000 per study-abroad engagement.
  2. • A maximum of $10,000 will be granted during each academic year.
  3. • Award monies will be used for tuition costs, travel expenses, or other fees related to study-abroad. Students will not receive financial assistance to exceed the full cost of a study-abroad engagement, and cannot combine awards with the Center for Global Engagement or other funding sources when the total financial assistance would exceed the full cost of a study-abroad engagement.
  4. • The Giandoni Awards Committee will evaluate all applications for overall academic merit, prior performance in the History Department, and the stated benefit of study abroad for the student’s current study of history and anticipated career trajectory.
  5. • Applications may include proposals for the student to participate in short-term study abroad, semester-long study-abroad, or year-long study abroad programs overseen by the Center for Global Engagement.
  6. • Applicants must be an undergraduate student enrolled in the BA program as a History Major or Minor with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher, or a graduate student enrolled in the MA program with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, making Satisfactory Academic Progress as defined by the Office of Student Financial Aid.
  7. • Applicants are required to submit at least one, no more than two faculty recommendations.
  8. • Applicants may only receive one Giandoni Study Abroad Award.
  9. • ODU’s Office of Student Financial Aid will administer the Giandoni Study Abroad Scholarships.
