Application for Giandoni Graduate Student Research Award

Please carefully read the award information below and fill out the application form below. Here’s what is required for the application for the Giandoni Undergraduate Research Award:
• Your current cumulative and departmental GPA.
• A list of courses taken at ODU in the Department of History, and grades received.
• A digital submission of a one-page, single-spaced statement describing the research project, preparation done in advance of the proposed research, and a detailed plan for completing the proposed research.
• A digital submission of a proposed budget, to include (where applicable) materials costs, travel, lodging, digital access or membership fees, reproduction costs, or other expected expenses related to the research.
• A faculty recommendation from the faculty advisor for the project. The student must have previously discussed the project with the advisor and agreed on the research to be undertaken.

Instructions:

Applicants will submit this completed application form that includes a current cumulative and departmental GPA and a list of courses taken at ODU in the Department of History and grades received. In addition, students will submit a one-page, single-spaced statement describing the project, preparation done in advance of the proposed research, and a detailed plan for completing the proposed research, along with a separate budget that will include (where applicable) materials costs, travel, lodging, digital access or membership fees, reproduction costs, etc. Applicants will also request the faculty advisor for the project to submit a recommendation form on their behalf.


Award Information:

  1. • Awards offer financial assistance in the amount of $500 to $3,000 per research proposal.
  2. • A maximum of $6,000 will be granted during each academic year.
  3. • Award monies will be used for travel expenses, database access, photocopying costs, and other research-related expenditures.
  4. • The Giandoni Awards Committee will evaluate each applicant for overall academic merit, faculty advisor approval, and the strength and feasibility of the proposed research project.
  5. • Applicants must be enrolled in the History M.A. program with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students without a demonstrable ODU GPA must request a recommendation form from a second ODU faculty member and approval from the Graduate Program Director. Limit two (2) faculty recommendations.
  6. • ODU’s Department of History will administer the Giandoni Graduate Research Awards.
  7. • Applicants must spend awarded funds within six months of notification of the award.
  8. • Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until a final deadline at the end of the semester.
